How can we use tech to help under 18s get the most from the web and stay safe?

Current Internet safety solutions require extensive technical skill to install and configure, are extremely inflexible or are easy to bypass. Cleanband solves these by:

• Providing a range of Trusted Authorities that the subscriber can choose from. This could be an NGO, an author, a school or a religious organisation that the subscriber trusts to make a recommendation about what should be accessible on the Internet

• Allowing each home to easily customise or override all settings

• Running on the network between the home and the internet, so there is no software to install and all devices are protected

• Protecting all protocols, not just HTTP

Cleanband allows parents who are less technically skilled than their children to have confidence that their home Internet connection is protected. This will minimize Internet crime, reduce the incidence of online bullying and restrict the viewing of harmful material. The result is to allow parents to confidently let their children explore the Internet and develop critical skills without fear of them accessing unacceptable content or visiting undesirable chat rooms.

Cleanband is currently operational and available through one UK-based ISP.
